NEW MEMBER INFORMATION

Welcome Brothers and Siters to Local 78.

This sheet is to provide you with some basic information you need to know as a member of our Union. Please keep this information somewhere safe so you can refer back to it when you need.

Local 78: Our office contact information is listed above-this is where you come to pay your dues (remember, you must keep current on your dues- if you don’t pay for two months you will be automatically suspended and not be able to work on our sites! You can always pay for several months in advance.) You also can use the office for information, job placement any problems such as accidents, injuries, or other on-the-job issues. The out of work List is updated every 3 months- you must speak with Gullen to have your name put on the list, or to renew your name on the list. Remember if your address or phone changes make sure you contact the Local 78 office to give us the new information so we may reach you, and so you receive our Newsletter and other important information we provide.

Training

as a Local 78 Member in good standing you are entitled to Free training, including all the classes you need to maintain your licenses and learn new skills to expand the kinds of work you may perform- such as lead abatement, scaffold work, etc, and also learn English and prepare for a GED (High School Equivalency Diploma), computer classes and Defensive Driving Course (required for NYS Driver’s License.)

NOTE: Members wishing to attend an Asbestos Handler or Supervisor Refresher course must bring their Asbestos licenses and union book. Training certificates (NYS DOH 2832 NJ DOH ASB 24) must be presented for the initial refresher course and all other refresher courses taken at other schools. In the case of a change in name or social security number proper documentation must be presented the day of the course.

Benefits

As a Local 78 member you become eligible for benefits after 400 working hours between May 1st through October 31th for medical coverage starting January through December and another 400 hours from November 1st. through April 31 for medical coverage starting July through December. All the information about benefits- health, dental, vision, annuity, and pension- are contained in the SPD Book in English, Spanish and Polish which can be obtained by visiting or calling the Mason Tenders Trust Fund Office. Make sure you fill out and return to the Local 78 office your Benefit Data Card with all the appropriate information including copies of your Social Security Card, the names and Social Security Cards of all your dependents you want covered by your benefits, and copies of your marriage and birth certificates.

Mason Tenders District Council- In the case that your benefits are not paid, or not paid properly you can contact field representatives Joe Bianco or Dave Bolger at the below address and phone numbers. You can verify this by looking at your pay-stubs. Remember: you should keep all your pay-stubs in a safe place so if a problem arises; you have all the information you need.

Medical Test- As a Local 78 Member you can be reimbursed for your required medical test- you must go to the MT Training Fund (School) to get the proper form, then go to the facility listed below and pay $84 for the test, then return to the MT Training Fund with your receipt to be reimbursed the full amount- remember, you must get your Medical Test before you can have your Fit Test! Both your medical and fit test and a copy of your updated licenses are required for you to be placed on the Local 78 Out-of-work list. If Gullen dispatches you to a Lead abatement job site, you may get a free initial Lead Blood Test at the facility listed below before you begin the job. You can go for your test at the following location.

Union Meetings

Is held the 4th Tuesday of each month except July and August, at 7:00 P.M for general membership. The meetings are used to report to the membership all the goings-on of the union, and for members to raise questions and concerns about all aspects of union business. There is time at the end of the meeting for any member comments or question during the New Business and Good and Welfare sections the meetings are held at:
